More Than I Signed Up For

Being the mom of a diabetic kid is not easy on a normal day.  Being the mom of a diabetic kid on Halloween is beyond crap.  I kid you not.
Last year, when G's diabetes was fresh in everyone's mind, there were people in our community that had special trick or treat stuff for him.  This was pretty cool and made me really appreciate our community.  This year, G is back to being a normal kid in everyone's mind.  Even though they all know he's diabetic, it's just part of him and he's just one of the mess of 4th grade boys trick or treating through town.
Needless to say, G got a pillowcase full of candy.  None of it healthy.  It's hard to watch him be one of the few kids in class who didn't have Halloween candy in his lunch.  We have been battling low and high blood sugars and the moodiness that goes with it all week.
Most of the candy is gone now so hopefully we can have a couple of good weeks until Thanksgiving.
Hopefully....

  1. I was diagnosed six days after halloween in sixth grade. I still had all my candy! My parents had been rationing it. To top it off, the day we went to the hospital, my teacher gave us all goodie bags of candy. It was killer. My brothers ate theirs up and I had to ration mine out.

When I was younger, my parents let me eat whatever without measuring on thanksgiving, gave their best low-ball guess at insulin dosing, and then we caught up later when the highs set in. I always felt like crap, but everyone else did too, so my after-meal nap was matched by the standard post-turkey nap that the rest of my family was taking. I still function relatively the same way, but I do things like skip stuffing and mashed potatoes for my favorite, corn casserole.

This will be my first thanksgiving without my family, so we'll see how it goes! I am having dinner with a family who also lives in the park. Should be fun!

  2. I'm always interested in hearing how other families deal with holidays. G was diagnosed just before Valentines, but that wasn't nearly as bad as Halloween.
